The characteristics of friction welded joint of W6Mo5Cr4V2 steel and 45 steel under external electromagnetic field were discussed, and the influence of different external electromagnetic fields on the microstructure,distributions of chemical elements and the tensile strength of the joints were analyzed. The results show that the ferrites near 45 steel side of the weld zone decrease when applying the electromagnetic field at the friction stage and increase when applying the field at the forging stage of friction welding between the two steels. The electromagnetic field observably promotes the diffusion of the dominating chemical elements at the forging stage. Moreover, the tensile strength of the joints was improved when applying the electromagnetic field at the forging stage with short time and low intensity of inductive current.
