Abstract
Engineering application and dynamic simulation of the modified SBR system with continuous flow and constant level are presented with emphasis on biological nutrient removal, and the application of its dynamic simulation in project design and the mathematical model basis are discussed. The design flexibility in meeting various effluent requirements is illustrated in case studies. The operating experiences since 1995 in full-scale wastewater treatment plants have showed that the system is reliable and easy to operate with high efficiency. Under the cold climate in Canada, annual average rate of BOD 5, TN , TP , and TSS removal is 97%, 81%, 88%, and 94% respectively. Furthermore, the modified SBR system is characterized by high concentration of excess sludge with an average of about 20 000 mg/L, which means that the cost of its sludge treatment facility is significantly reduced compared to conventional activated sludge process with continuous flow.
