Abstract
Narrative competence, as a decontextualized language skill, embodies rich messages about aspects of children's development, namely, affection, cognition, social and cultural development. Many researches have been done in this area in Europe and America. This paper makes a brief study on the origin of narrative research, the definition, features and functions of narrative and children's narrative development in hope of providing some enlightenment for the study of Chinese-speaking children's narrative performance.
