Abstract
Attracting,developing and retaining effective teachers is the topic of teacher education policy reform in most countries around the world.There has been a strong tradition of ongoing professional development,and the teacher education policy significant change in the Canada since the 1990s.The major purpose of the education reform is to improve teacher effectiveness and professional development.This paper provides an overview of teacher professional development policies in Ontario,such as the Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession,the Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession,New Teacher Induction Program,Teacher Performance Appraisal,the Teacher Learning and Leadership Program.In addition,the policy the effects and trends of these policies on teacher professional development are addressed.
