Abstract
This article highlights the contribution of the laywomen teachers to the education of the urban youth of Quebec in the first third of the 19th century. The area chosen for investigation is Montreal, a half English and half French-speaking town at that time. As elsewhere in the Occidental world, these women successfully took over the task of instructing boys and girls. Teaching became for several of them a fulfilling career, a profitable profession that they exercised with a diversified clientele within a framework of total or relative autonomy. They cannot be credited with a conscious wish for professionalization. Nevertheless, their efforts provided schooling for a large number of children and enabled girls to continue their education beyond the primary level, well before the State took the initiative in public instruction in both urban and rural areas.
