Abstract
China is one of the biggest importers of barley in the world with relatively low planting areas and production. This paper used four indicators (international market share, trade competitive index, revealed comparative advantage index and export price) to analyze the international competitiveness of Chinese barley sector by comparing with European Union, Russia, Ukraine, Canada and Australia which rank in the top of the world both in terms of production and export. The research result showed that the international competitiveness of Chinese barley was very weak. In the long run, Chinese demand on barley would outpace the domestic supply, and China would import barley from the international market. Based on the analysis, the authors suggested that China should take relevant policy measures to encourage the domestic barley production and enhance the comprehensive production capacity.
