Les progres recents, realises en gastro-enterologie sont le fruit direct des decouvertes faites a un rythme rapide, en recherche fondamentale, dans les domaines de la biologie cellulaire et de la biologie moleculaire. L’approche a permis de definir les processus physiologiques normaux du tube digestif et la pathogenese des mecanismes morbides. Le milieu de la recherche en gastro-enterologie au Canada est devenu chef de file mondial par ses efforts deployes dans toutes les disciplines connexes aux maladies digestives. Une bonne part du succes remporte est tributaire de l’excellence qui caracterise les stagiaires des cycles superieurs et ceux en formation postuniversitaire, engages dans la recherche en gastro-enterologie dans divers etablissements au Canada. Bon nombre de ces stagiaires recoivent des subventions de l’Association canadienne de gastroenterologie (ACG), auxquelles contribuent les Instituts de recherche en sante du Canada, certains partenaires du secteur de l’industrie et la Fondation canadienne des maladies inflammatoires de l’intestin.
