Abstract
In America and Canada both with a great number of immigrants, the mainstream culture had always been playing the leading role until 1960s when multicultural education started to grow as a consequence of the civil rights movement. Multiculturalism in both countries has been promoted greatly ever since. The focus of the multicultural education is to take cultures of minority groups as components of the national cultures, making it a special feature of the national culture. A major function of the multicultural education is to provide students from all social classes, genders, and racial and cultural groups an equal opportunity to learn. In addition, the multicultural education plays a role in eliminating prejudice and discrimination, and it is significant in promoting the development of the multicultural societies.
