Abstract

Objective: To investigate the emotional processing characteristics for college students with different alexithymia in order to supply scientific evidence for intervention of this disorder. Methods: 785 college students received measurement of emotional processing styles with Emotional Processing Scale( EPS,Chinese version),and the results were compared with normal controls. Results: The scoring on Toronto Alexithymia Scale( TAS),together with its subordinate components,was significantly higher in students with high alexithymia disorder compared to the normal controls( P 0. 01). SingleImpoverished emotional experiencecould predict the degree of alexithymia in students with lower scores on TAS,whereas combined components ofImpoverished emotional experience,Signs of unprocessed emotionsandSuppressioncould effectively estimate extent of alexithymia in those with higher scores.Conclusion: Emotional processing deficits may be responsible for college students with alexithymia,andImpoverished emotional experiencecan be the most important factors that affect the development of alexithymia.
