Different types of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers have been designed and put into industrial operation by different designers during their rapid development. In a design every designer has his own thermal calculation method. However, less information is available in published papers. A simple thermal calculation method for designing a CFB boiler was introduced based on most recent information worldwide, especially research and industrial experience achievements at Zhejiang University on the CFB boiler technologies in recent decade. Determination of the furnace size, heat balance and heat transfer in a furnace is reported. A CFB boiler with a high temperature cyclone is applied as an example and other types of CFB boiler could be designed with modifying the thermal calculation method.
