Abstract
In Mercy among the Children,the Canadian modernist writer David Adams Richards relates the short tragic life of Sydney Henderson using the first person narrative in the voice of the hero's son,Lyle Henderson.The novel explores the conflict and clash between social ethics and personal beliefs.Through analyzing the Lyle's behavioral change in different chapter,this paper intends to probe into his mind course in his rising above the tragic fate of his father and grandfather and in his successful redemption of his own soul.
