Understanding the Aging Degradation of Doped Barium Cerate Proton Conductor in Ambient Air at Room Temperature

Abstract
In this work, we report that doped barium cerate proton conductor was prone to a gradual decomposition in ambient air at room temperature under atmospheric CO 2 and low humidity level. Via using a variety of materials characterization techniques including XRD, SEM, TEM, STEM-EDX and TGA-DSC, it was confirmed that the adsorbed H 2 O initiated and promoted the decomposition of the doped cerate, subsequently leading to the formation of BaCO 3 nanorods as the major impurity, presumably following a microcrucible mechanism. The influences of the sintering temperature, Zr doping ratio and air relative humidity of were also investigated.
