Effects of Perlite Priming on Triploid Water Melon Seed Germination under Different Temperatures

Abstract
Effects of perlite priming on triploid water melon seed germination were investigated in the present study. After seed priming,the seeds were exposed to optimal temperature( 25 ℃ /25 ℃,day / night temperature) and sub-optimal temperature conditions( 35 ℃ /15 ℃,day / night temperature). Seed germination rate and germination index were decreased under sub-optimal temperature conditions in seeds compared to optimal temperature conditions. Indeed,perlite priming enhanced seed germination rate and germination index in old seeds,while not in new seeds. Perlite priming increased seed dehydrogenase activity and reduced the conductivity in leaching solution,which suggested that perlite priming enhanced the respiratory rate and improved the membrane integrity.
