Eugene-Fran ois Vidocq est non seulement le pere de la police judiciaire et le fondateur de la toute premiere agence de detective prive de l’histoire, mais aussi le premier ecrivain policier du monde moderne. L’histoire litteraire lui doit une place meritee. Memoires de Vidocq et ses publications romanesques constituent les deux etapes de sa creation litteraire. Alors que les quatre volumes de Memoires lui valurent une renomme qui persiste jusqu’aujourd’hui, Les Vrais Mysteres de Paris fut salue comme l’encyclopedie des fiches policieres. Sa personnalite judiciaire ne lui permettant pas de deployer pleinement son talent, ses uvres ont effectivement du mal a egaler le chef-d’oeuvre de ses contemporains sur le plan de la langue et de la dimension aussi bien historique que philosophique. Ⅱ faudrait pourtant reconna tre sa juste valeur en pretant particulierement attention a ses valeurs documentaires et historiques. Vidocq, etant a la fois vagabond et geant de l’epoque, a inspire de grands ecrivains tels qu’Hugo et Balzac.
