Abstract
More than fifteen thousand Chinese workers took part in the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the 1870s and 1880s. However, after the completion of the railway, the Canadian government implemented the racist Head Tax and the Chinese Exclusion Act successively to prohibit Chinese immigration. As a result, thousands of Chinese families were unable to reunite. Paul Yee's short story Ghost Train is dedicated to those Chinese railway workers. This paper attempts to analyze, from postcolonial perspective, the rewriting of history, hybridity and other strategies used in the novel. This paper also looks at the novel as a journeying tale. Journey symbolizes spiritual baptism. Postcolonial writing in literature is complemented by the political activities for upholding the ethnic rights. Chinese communities' long time efforts finally made Canadian government apologize in 2006 for the racist Head Tax policy and formally acknowledge the Chinese railroad workers' contribution to Canada.
