Abstract
Patrimony and patrimonialization have long served as key vectors of postcolonial statecraft in Latin America.Stewardship of monuments and cultural practices has thus done much to underwrite legislation, bureaucratic structures, and forms of knowledge essential to modern nation-states and transnational programs like UNESCO World Heritage initiatives.Meanwhile, and most recently, growth in leisure tourism and the heritage industry has spurred a proliferation of strategies for promoting patrimony (Babb 2010; Guerr ón 2014; Hill and Tanaka 2015; Little 2004).In much scholarship on heritage, however, living traditions and their reproduction tend to be associated with so-called intangible patrimonies, or folkloric practices, knowledges, and cultural forms.Such intangible patrimony is often counterposed to monuments and buildings (Arzipe and Amescua 2013; Comaroff and Comaroff 2009; Kirshenblatt-Gimblett 1998; Smith and Akagawa 2009).With a few notable exceptions (e.g., Abercrombie, this volume;
