Glycosylation provides three common classes of co- and posttranslational modifications to proteins which are distinguished by the sites of attachment to the polypeptide and have distinct oligosaccharide structural motifs. These different structural types may be linked covalently to the side chains of: Asparagine ( N -linked Asn), or Serine ( O -linked Ser) and/or threonine ( O -linked Thr) (reviewed in ref. 1 ); or To the protein C-terminal carboxyl group to form an amide through the amino function of a glycolipid-modified phosphoethanolamine moiety (reviewed in ref. 2 ).
