Depuis l’invasion turque de Chypre en 1974, plusieurs centaines de personnes sont portées disparues. En dépit des exhumations d’ossements, récemment identifiés à un nombre important des disparus, l’élaboration de leur deuil reste entravée. L’auteur s’efforce de montrer comment leurs familles se chargent d’une fonction de porte-deuil en faveur de l’ensemble social. Leur deuil semble lié aux péripéties de la société chypriote-grecque, accablée par des traumas et des deuils irrésolus de ses idéaux et de sa mémoire collective. C’est ainsi que la construction d’une mémoire tempérée et partagée par ses membres, et l’envisagement d’un futur possible pour le pays sont mis en péril.
