Tras establecer la distinción entre palabras y términos, el ensayo intenta despejar la confusión que se ha creado por el hecho de que ‘comunalidad’ nació a la vez como palabra y como término. En la segunda parte, se plantean limitaciones y posibilidades de la empresa científica que se ha formado en torno al término, y se esboza la hipótesis de que la palabra tiene una función central que cumplir en la construcción del mundo nuevo, en particular, para la recuperación del arte de vivir comunal.
