Depuis quelques années, j’observe des étudiantes en adaptation scolaire intervenant auprès d’élèves en difficultés d’apprentissage en mathématiques. Ces observations, en direct ou par l’intermédiaire d’enregistrements vidéoscopiques, m’ont conduite à m’interroger sur la relation d’aide qui s’installe entre l’enfant et l’intervenante et sur le lien de dépendance qui semblait se manifester à l’occasion. C’est sous l’angle du contrat didactique sous l’influence d’objectifs plus explicites ici qu’en classe ordinaire, me semble-t-il, que j’analyse les interventions réalisées auprès d’une enfant en difficultés d’apprentissage, à propos de problèmes simples d’addition et de soustraction. Cette analyse me permet d’illustrer le lien de dépendance dont je viens de parler et sa persistance malgré des interventions visant justement à le briser. Au-delà du contrat, je donne également une explication à ce phénomène en pointant les limites de l’intervention envisagée. Celle-ci, consistant à donner aux élèves une démarche de résolution de problèmes, ne peut permettre à l’élève de comprendre parce qu’elle ne repose pas sur une analyse de la tâche à réaliser et parce qu’elle ne permet pas un travail cognitif de l’enfant à propos de la tâche mathématique spécifique qui est en jeu.
