Abstract
Apesar de estudos farmacológicos darem uma contribuição importante para o entendimento da medicina tradicional dos povos indígenas em termos de valor terapêutico das diferente plantas, eles nem sempre conseguem retratar os vários aspectos socioculturais e simbólicos deste tipos de medicamentos. Este estudo pretende colmatar esta lacuna através da análise dos valores sócioculturais e religiosos das plantas medicinais em comunidades indígenas no Chile e no Equador, com especial atenção para a medicina tradicional. Os dados mostram que a eficácia terapêutica da medicina tradicional não é apenas baseada em ingredientes biologicamente ativos, mas também está relacionada com o significado simbólico e religioso atribuído aos tratamentos por médicos tradicionais e pacientes. O estudo conclui que, a fim de compreender a eficácia terapêutica das plantas, é necessário compreender o contexto sociocultural em que elas são utilizadas.
