Abstract
Cherchant à approfondir le thème de la démographie de la pauvreté, l’auteur met en question un postulat du mouvement de planification familiale selon lequel le niveau élevé de fécondité des pays sous-développés est l’effet de l’irrationalité et de l’absence d’attitude « moderne » en matière de procréation. Selon lui, la fécondité est plutôt, pour les femmes et les familles concernées, une stratégie de survie. Les enfants sont vus comme des « fournisseurs de temps »; leur participation aux activités domestiques libère les adultes d’une grande partie de ces tâches et leur permet de se consacrer à des activités plus rentables. En examinant cette hypothèse auprès des femmes marginales d’Asuncion (Paraguay), l’auteur conclut que plus la situation économique est grave, plus les femmes favorisent, consciemment, une famille nombreuse. Cependant, des tendances indiquent une baisse du niveau de fécondité des marginaux, en raison de l’utilisation de contraceptifs chez les femmes plus jeunes.
