Abstract

A deterministic generation capacity planning model for predominantly hydro powered electric utilities is formulated. Motivated by the need to alleviate the environmental hazard of hydroelectric reservoirs, optimal (or near optimal) plant-mix now considers massive energy storage plants involving electrolytic hydrogen. Also, provisions have been made to involve simultaneously independent industrial demand for hydrogen. A linear integer master program and a generalized network flow subprogram take part in a Benders’ type solution technique. Computational results for reasonably sized instances are provided.
