Abstract
In this chapter the theory and practice of humanistic and experiential psychotherapies in the treatment of mood disorders and specifically depression are discussed. Client-centered, gestalt, and emotion-focused perspectives on the etiology of depression are presented and the various models for treating depression are described. This is followed by a review of the research on experiential and emotion-focused psychotherapy in the treatment of depression with a specific focus on the efficacy of this approach in treating depression as well as studies that have attempted to identify the specific processes that contribute to change, including emotional processing and the therapeutic relationship.
