(Abstracted from Anesthesiology, 123:1105–1112, 2015) There is mounting evidence that potentially severe decrements in cognitive function may occur in elderly patients after a critical illness. However, the magnitude of this effect at the population level, as well as the potential predisposition of critically ill patients toward developing dementia, has not been elucidated.
