A insuficiência renal aguda é uma patologia grave que pode ser reversível é considerada uma das principais complicações nos pacientes da unidade de terapia intensiva. Teve como objetivo descrever de acordo com a literatura as principais causas de insuficiência renal e a intervenção de enfermagem. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva de revisão da literatura, por meio da qual realizou-se um levantamento da produção científica relacionada a insuficiência renal aguda nas bases de dados LILACS, SciELO e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde. É uma complicação em cerca de 5% das hospitalizações e até 30% das internações. A atuação do profissional enfermeiro contribui na prevenção e na diminuição dos índices dessa complicação através da tomada de decisão e da sistematização da assistência de enfermagem como ferramenta de trabalho.
