Deux balles de calibre 22 dans l'abdomen. C'est la mort qu'a choisie Laurent Rouleau, un Québécois de 59 ans souffrant de sclérose en plaques depuis de nombreuses années. Il avait interrogé ses médecins, s'était renseigné sur le droit en vigueur en matière d'euthanasie et de suicide assisté. Il comprit qu'il n'y avait pour lui aucune alternative légale au suicide violent. Il choisit de mourir par arme à feu, mais suffisamment lentement pour pouvoir téléphoner au 911 (le numéro d'urgence nord-américain) et éviter à son épouse de trouver son cadavre.1 Arrivé à l'hôpital, il était lucide et refusa une intervention visant à stopper l'hémorragie. Fin de non-recevoir de l'équipe d'urgence : suicide égale incompétence égale traitement maximal. Finalement un psychiatre certifie que le patient est capable de discernement et que sa décision est valide. Laurent Rouleau meurt le lendemain.
