De tout temps, les hommes se sont interrogés et ont spéculé sur l’existence ou non d’une « vie après la mort ». Par contre, les signes concrets de la mort elle-même étaient censés aller de soi (si l’on met de côté les angoisses récurrentes suscitées par le risque d’être enterré vivant). À notre époque, les progrès de la médecine ont donné une tournure inédite à cette question. En effet, les progrès en matière de réanimation et de transplantation d’organes ont conduit à l’adoption d’une définition cérébrale de la mort. Celle-ci est assez claire sur le plan opérationnel et empirique mais reste mystérieuse quant à ses fondements conceptuels. La mort cérébrale est-elle synonyme de mort de la conscience, ou désigne-t-elle en réalité la fin du fonctionnement intégré et cohérent de l’organisme humain ? Contrairement à une idée largement répandue, c’est bien cette seconde interprétation qui fonde le concept de mort cérébrale. Ceci n’empêche pas ce concept de rester controversé, soit qu’on le soupçonne d’être trop complaisant envers les exigences de la médecine de transplantation, soit qu’on conteste son bien-fondé théorique, ou encore qu’on lui préfère une définition « néocorticale » de la mort qui serait le corrélat matériel de la mort du psychisme.
