Abstract
Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons why people seek medical care. It can have an overwhelming effect on a patient’s life and can cause distress and disability. Alice, a community client who is 94, suffers from chronic pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis. She has had this pain for 30 years. Chronic pain – pain that has lasted for at least three months – is usually accompanied by behavioural change. Alice is depressed, and while some days she is bright, the pain ‘eats away’ at her spirit.
