The Tuxpan Marine Terminal, a greenfield facility currently nearing completion in Mexico, is not only to be the country’s newest container terminal, but situated approximately 350 kilometers from Mexico City, is poised to become the principal port for the capital’s containerized cargo. This paper discusses the structural, geotechnical, and environmental solutions that were implemented throughout the design and construction of a state-of-the-art automated container terminal on a challenging site. Ground improvement included surcharge and wick drains and soil-cement deep mixing methods. The yard, which is constrained by environmental preserve areas, was developed for a unique grade-supported automated stacking crane system. The project also includes deepening of the existing navigation channel for post-Panamax service, as well as 1.2 kilometers of channel extension, and a new 500-meter-diameter turning basin. Planning for the project began in 2005 with the start of construction in 2013. The facility will be fully operational by late 2016.
