L’enseignement collégial, de par son statut d’enseignement post-secondaire, est considéré comme faisant partie de l’enseignement supérieur. Par contre, nous pouvons raisonnablement nous demander si cette appartenance à l’enseignement supérieur est aussi corroborée par la présence des caractéristiques de l’enseignement supérieur dans l’enseignement collégial, par la ressemblance des tâches dévolues aux enseignants du collégial par rapport à celles des enseignants universitaires, ainsi que l’impact de l’appartenance à l’enseignement supérieur sur l’identité professionnelle des enseignants du collégial. Les objectifs principaux de l’enseignement supérieur (former des spécialistes de haut niveau, former des citoyens responsables, ainsi que créer et diffuser de nouvelles connaissances) se retrouvant dans les missions de l’enseignement collégial, les tâches des enseignants du collégial ressemblant plus à celles de leur collègues du niveau universitaires qu’à celles des enseignants du secondaire, ainsi que l’identité professionnelle bidimensionnelle (enseignante et disciplinaire) des enseignants du collégial nous font conclure que l’enseignement collégial a pleinement sa place en enseignement supérieur.
