Abstract
L’historiographie, comme la mémoire populaire québécoise, entretient l’image d’une entente cordiale entre l’Église et l’Union nationale de Maurice Duplessis à laquelle la figure controversée de Mgr Joseph Charbonneau serait la seule exception. Les travaux des historiens se sont malheureusement souvent limités à une relecture des recherches déjà effectuées par Robert Rumilly et Conrad Black, dont le biais idéologique a pourtant été critiqué. Les archives religieuses, qui s’ouvrent progressivement aux chercheurs, permettent d’élaborer une vision plus complète et nuancée des rapports entre le gouvernement provincial et l’épiscopat.
