Abstract
One of the highlights of the Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI), a summer program with the Toronto Police Services, is the opportunity for participants – most of them Black and Brown youth of Caribbean and South Asian origin – to be part of the police officers’ float in the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival parade. This carnival, formerly known and still commonly referred to as Caribana, is a weeklong series of celebratory events pertaining to Canada’s Caribbean community which culminate on the first Saturday of August with a large parade of floats with costumed revellers and accompanying music.
