Abstract
The College of Nurses of Ontario maintains several classes of registration for its nurses. The Extended Class (EC) is granted to Registered Nurses (RN) who have at least 2 years of full time experience (within the last 5 years) and who have completed an accredited Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program. The Nurse Practitioner designation indicates advanced knowledge and decision-making skills in assessment, diagnosis, and health care management. Nurse Practitioners have the authority to perform specific procedures without the order of, or supervision by, a physician. Nurse Practitioners are held accountable for both their actions and their decisions. If a similar system were to be initiated for Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), would it be ethical for these “Tech Practitioners” who are employed by a large animal veterinarian to perform specific procedures (such as castration, dehorning, or vaccination) with or without supervision by the veterinarian?
