Abstract
Taking as a starting-point the programmatic phrase of St. Therese of Lisieux: To love Jesus and to make him loved , the author proposes achieving a synthesis of the saints' theology as principally a Christ-centred one. This in turn is seen in wide-ranging perspectives, namely, in the Fathers, in the Doctors and in the Mystics, considering a dual theological action: the speculative aspect (fides et ratio ) and the mystical one (fides et amor). The saints' Christ-centredness is principally expressed in two directions: The Nicene-Constantinopolitan symbol, which contemplates Christ in the Trinity and the Quicumque symbol, which successively considers the Trinity and Christ. The unending richness of Christ's mystery can be glimpsed through the example of some saints. It shines forth from different kinds of theology, for instance, from the mystical, the symbolic and speculative theology. He ends with St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort's Totus Tuus, adopted by John Paul II. This motto expresses the practical Christ-centredness recommended to all baptized persons as an instrument of holiness: love as the total gift of self to Jesus by means of Mary.
