Les mots désignant les villes en langue thaïe sont beaucoup plus nombreux que ceux dont disposent les langues européennes ou mêmes les langues des pays voisins de la Thaïlande. Bien entendu, chaque terme a son histoire et un emploi bien spécifique, même si les confusions et les doublets ne sont pas rares. Les effets de mode ne sont pas non plus complètement absents. Cet article aborde principalement les cas de mueang, krung, nakhon, thani, buri, wiang, chiang et nikhom. Quelques traits sont à retenir : l’opposition entre la ville du roi et celle du commerçant ; ensuite l’importance de l’élément aquatique, qu’illustre particulièrement bien le cas de krung qui désigna d’abord le fleuve, puis le roi, enfin la capitale.
