Abstract
Les émotions occupent une place décisive dans la théorie humaniste des arts qui règne en Europe entre le xvie et le xviiie siècle. Elles ne constituent pas seulement des objets de la représentation (rappelons que « l’expression » des passions est une partie de la peinture aussi importante que le dessin, la composition ou le coloris), elles sont aussi sa finalité : le movere constitue avec le docere et le placere le triple objectif du peintre comme du poète. Pourtant, pendant un moment circonscrit de l’histoire occidentale des arts qui a débuté au cours de la seconde moitié du xixe siècle et s’est achevé un siècle plus tard, le lien des arts et des émotions a été rompu. L’esthétique moderniste a refusé que les arts représentent des émotions, en suscitent, ou fournissent des modèles de comportements passionnels. Dans le même temps a triomphé un philosophème nouveau : celui d’émotion spécifiquement esthétique. Je voudrais ici, en me penchant principalement sur le cas de la peinture, exposer ce passage de la pathétique artistique classique et romantique à l’émotion esthétique moderniste, en analyser les causes et en peser les raisons.
