La ganadería es un rubro importante de la economía de Nicaragua, con un aporte al producto interno bruto en el período 1990 — 2001 estimado de entre el 4 y el 6 % (http://www.mific.gob.ni/Cluster/end carne.doc). Actualmente, 13 millones de están dedicadas a la ganadería, lo que significa el del territorio nacional (Pomareda, 1998). En departamento de Rivas, predomina la explotación ganadera extensiva con un manejo tradicional de doble propósito, leche y Carne, mayoritariamente en manos de pequeños y medianos productores. Estas fincas aún mantienen una variada cobertura arbórea que incluye bosques, bosques riparios, charrales, cercas vivas y árboles dispersos en los potreros, aunque las densidades y la composición varían de una finca a otra (López, et al. , 2003).
