이민은 세계화(globalization)시대의 보편적인 사회 현상이라 할 수 있다. 정치적, 경제적, 교육적 이유 등으로 수많은 사람들이 이민을 갔거나 현재 이민을 계획하고 있다. 특히 최근 UNESCO에서 지명한 가장 살기 좋은 나라 중 하나이며, 청정 자연 환경으로 주목받고 있는 캐나다는 전 세계인에게 최고의 이민 선호국으로 자리 잡고 있으며 매년 이민자의 수적 증가와 이민자 출신 국적의 다양성에서 이를 알 수 있다. 제2차 세계대전 이후 780만 명 정도의 이민자들이 캐나다에 정착함으로써 캐나다 이민의 역사는 시작되었으며 1990년 이후 캐나다는 매년 대략 230,000명의 이민자를 받고 있다(Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 2000). 캐나다 이민자의 인종 분포를 보면 1950년대 이후 극적인 인종적 변화를 엿 볼 수 있다. 단적인 예로 1957년도에 캐나다 10대 이민 국가는 모두 유럽의 국가들이었으나 1997년에는 10대 이민국 중 1-8위를 차지하는 국가들이 모두 비 유럽권 국가들이었다. 1999년도 캐나다로 이민 오는 3대 지역을 살펴보면 아시아, 태평양 지역(51%), 유럽연합과 영국(21%) 그리고 아프리카와 중동지역(18%)이다. 또한 이민자의 대략 30%는 중화인민공화국, 필리핀, 대한민국, 타이완, 홍콩 출신이며 15%정도는 인도, 파키스탄, 스리랑카 출신으로 구성되어 있다 (Citizenship and Immigration Canada, 2000). 이와 같이 다 문화권 출신의 다 민족으로 구성된 캐나다 이민 사회는 그 자체로 다양한 가능성 뿐 아니라 다양한 문제성 또한 내포하고 있다. 특히 건강권이 인간의 기본권임을 생각하여 볼 때 이민이 개인의 건강에 미치는 영향은 중요한 연구주제라 아니 할 수 없다.
