Abstract
Dielectric polymer actuators normally operate at electric fields close to the dielectric breakdown strength of elastomeric materials, or in the range 30 ‐ 100 MV/m. The high electric fields required for dielectric actuator operation necessitate th e use of thin elastomeric films in their fabrication. In a recently completed Technology Investment Fund project, DRDC Atlantic and Bodycote Materials Testing Canada investigated various methods for producing dielectric actuators from thin polymeric films. During this study, methods were developed for the fabrication of rolled actuators using spray-casting, and fi bre actuators using melt processing. Spray-casting was carried out with a thermosetting polyether polyurethane formulation or a silicone elastomer, using a custom built apparatus for producing large area multi-layer films. Fibre actuators were fabricated from thermoplastic polyurethane using a co-extrusion process to produce hollow tubes with internal and external compliant electrodes. The most difficult challenges encountered were related to electrical termination of the compliant electrodes, and dielectric film conductivity. Results of this study are discu ssed along with performance data for rolled and fibre actuators.
