Abstract
A cute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the leading cause of death in developed countries; 1 however, in-hospital mortality from this cause has been declining over the last three decades.2 This reduction in mortality coincides with the improvement in health and living standards and with new treatments like thrombolysis and new interventions like percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).Secondary and primary prevention strategies have contributed significantly and the age-adjusted mortality is expected to continue to decline with further improvements in treatments, better uptake of primary and secondary prevention strategies and also with further improvement in our ability to recognise this challenging disease very early in its course.The success of treatment rests on: 1) identification of patients in the very early stages of AMI; 2) implementation of treatment to recanalise the occluded artery; 3) access to early defibrillation and 4) admission to properly monitored coronary care or intensive care units (CCU or ICU) for the
