ISEE-208 Objective: Given the high prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection, a screening program among pregnant women currently exists in Nunavik (population ≈ 10,000). The objectives of this study were, to assess, during the period 1994 to 2003, the efficacy of the screening program in identifying seroconversions during pregnancy and the management of proper follow-up for both mothers and infants; and to document the consequences of congenital toxoplasmosis in this population. Material and Methods: Through database analyses (birth files and a toxoplasmosis serology results database), potential cases of seroconversion during pregnancy were identified. Thereafter, medical charts were reviewed with regard to follow-up and treatment. A database of hospital diagnostics (Med-Echo) was also consulted to identify hospitalized cases of congenital toxoplasmosis. Results: The medical charts of 31 women and their 32 children were identified based on serologic data. Of these, 30 and 32 charts respectively were reviewed. After review, 61% (n = 19) of the women were confirmed to have a definite or probable acute infection during pregnancy. In 15 of 19 women (1 had left the community, 1 was probably infected before pregnancy after clinical assessment, and 2 were likely missed cases of seroconversion), information relative to their toxoplasmosis treatment was documented and all received Spiramycin during pregnancy. Accordingly, the infants born to these women had been identified as at risk for congenital toxoplasmosis. Fourteen of these children received appropriate treatment. None of the 15 potentially infected children developed toxoplasmosis based on negative serologic titers and absence of clinical evidence of infection. Review of the Med-Echo database revealed no reported cases of congenital toxoplasmosis hospitalized during the study period. Conclusions: The screening program in Nunavik identified many seroconversions during pregnancy. Both the affected women and their newborns had generally been properly identified and managed. No cases of congenital toxoplasmosis were reported during the period 1994 to 2003.
