Cette enquête sur le compositeur, intellectuel et pédagogue John Rea, féru de paradoxes, procède par réponses sans questions. À l’instar de plusieurs de ses oeuvres, c’est plutôt par jeux de souvenirs que l’enquête est menée, en vue d’un portrait-robot. Ainsi, dans un premier temps, cinq personnes liées à John Rea (amis, anciens élèves, collaborateurs, collègues et/ou interprètes) ont été sollicitées pour rédiger librement, sous l’impulsion d’un souvenir leur ayant été mentionné, un bref essai sur l’enquêté. Il s’agit de Jacques Drouin, Michel Gonneville, James Harley, Alexina Louie et Alex Pauk. Dans un deuxième temps, chaque participant a été invité à lire chacun des autres témoignages et les commenter par de brèves notes de lecture. Enfin, en guise de conclusion, nous avons dégagé quelques traits qui, dans ces jeux de mémoires croisées et dépliées, font particulièrement retour. Or, comme dans un escalier de Penrose, ces éléments de réponses, bien que ne répondant à aucune question, en posent plusieurs.
