Abstract
On 17 April 1982 Queen Elizabeth I1 proclaimed the Constitution Act 1982 the supreme law of Canada. Its coming into force was heralded by many as the long-awaited and dramatic severance of the colonial m b i lical cord with Britain. Others, however, were more circumspect, for included in the act was the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This novel element in Canada's constitution led to much speculation about its effects on Canadian jurisprudence and on the nation as a whole.
