Cet article présente les résultats d’une recherche visant à identifier le rapport subjectif des personnes aînées à l’isolement social dans un contexte urbain au Canada. À partir d’entretiens individuels et collectifs effectués auprès de 50 personnes, l’étude montre une surproblématisation de la question de l’isolement social. En effet, lorsque concernées par l’isolement social, ces personnes revendiquent un droit au retrait choisi, tout en demandant un accès à une aide ponctuelle, centrée sur des besoins très concrets, afin de réduire les effets incommodants de leur désengagement volontaire.
