Abstract
Homme papillon (2001) et Icare en émoi (2012) représentent deux oeuvres d’envergure dans le parcours de John Rea, compositeur que l’on associe volontiers au postmodernisme musical. En prenant pour toile de fond certains éléments clés de l’histoire du structuralisme, nous explorerons l’hypothèse selon laquelle les thèmes réaniens de l’ humain et du géométrique se rejoignent au carrefour de deux idées fondatrices de la postmodernité : la « mort du sujet », à mettre en lien avec le formalisme qui sous-tend ici l’aspect géométrique , et la « mort de l’auteur », fondement paradoxal de la dialogique qui réhumanise la relation avec le lecteur – et par extension, l’auditeur – dès la fin des années 1960. Ainsi s’esquisseront les lignes d’une sorte d’ humanisme postmoderne qui, sans sortir intact de la redéfinition radicale du sujet qui bouleverse la seconde moitié du xx e siècle, n’en demeure pas moins soucieux de remettre l’humain au coeur de ses préoccupations.
