Abstract
Cet article se propose de renouveler la présentation du mouvement des Spirituels franciscains de Languedoc en tenant compte d’un document jusqu’à présent ignoré : le commentaire sur Daniel, de Barthélemy Sicard, rédigé dans la première décennie du XIVe siècle. Ce long texte exégétique constitue l’ouvrage savant produit en Languedoc par un disciple de Pierre Déjean Olieu, dans les années de persécution qui suivirent la mort de ce dernier. Une projection typologique du livre de Daniel dans l’histoire contemporaine permet de décrire la situation des frères persécutés comme captivité de l’esprit évangélique dans la nouvelle Babylone qu’est devenue l’Église romaine. Témoignant d’une adaptation des thèses d’Olieu aux nouvelles circonstances, ce texte permet de mieux saisir la continuité d’inspiration qui mène des écrits de son maître aux positions des béguins, inculpés par l’inquisition après 1318. Le choix final de rompre avec l’institution corrompue par fidélité au Christ qu’effectuèrent à cette date certains des Spirituels était inscrit comme une nécessité dans la théologie de l’histoire olivienne, mais logé dans un avenir proche que le présent a fini par rejoindre.
