Abstract
A phenomenological research design was used to explore and describe the subjective experience of women who had recurring genital herpes in order to begin to understand how women make sense of their lived experience of the disease. Indepth interviews were conducted with six women from the Vancouver area during which the women described their experience of living with recurring genital herpes. Seven common themes emerged from the data using Colaizzi's (1978) method of phenomenological analysis. The results of the study indicated that the stigma associated with this incurable sexually-transmitted disease, the fact that the disease can be transmitted to others, and its recurrent nature contributed to an ongoing need for the women to deal with the disease and its consequences.
