Abstract
This article examines the experience of Young Men’s Christian Association members in Britain in the period 1870-1914. By focusing on the history of one local British association. Leicester, it is possible to reconstruct both the administrative and cultural development of the YMCA in some detail. The article argues that the transformation of the YMCA into a vibrant institution catering not only to the spiritual but also the physical and mental needs of young men was the result of a complicated process of negotiation between the members and the association's patrons. As consumers of leisure young men were able to influence their terms of associational activity. The decision by the Leicester YMCA to purchase a billiard-table in 1905 symbolized the member’s success in promoting their vision of the YMCA.
