Abstract
Severe and widespread corrosion is common on outdoor military monuments throughout the northeastern "Rust Belt" area of North America. When in military service, these pieces can last almost indefinitely because they receive daily maintenance. When a field gun becomes a monument, however, the situation changes. The piece is demilitarized by welding all moving pieces together, and it is often parked beside a heavily salted street. Maintenance is abandoned forever. This article describes a preservation process using corrosion prevention compounds.
